Last week, comedienne Margaret Cho made the scandalous allegation that fellow Dancing With the Stars contestant Bristol Palin had been forced into the competition by her mother Sarah Palin. Avowed liberal Cho blogged that she and political daughter Bristol had become friends, although not close enough that she "asked me to babysit Tripp or anything," and that she heard the info from a source who "really should seriously know the dirt." On Saturday, Bristol posted a scathing response on Facebook, criticizing Cho's information and her politics.
"I will give my friend credit for creativity, and extra points for getting so many 'facts' wrong in so few sentences," writes the controversial third-place winner. "Let me be blunt: my mom did not 'force' me to go on DWtS. She did not ask me either. The show approached me. I thought about it. I made the decision."
Bristol writes that her parents were actually reluctant for Bristol to compete at first, worried that she would be "exposed to those who hate us for what we believe in." Once she signed up, though, Bristol says her parents were her biggest supporters.
"Anyone who watched the show could tell I performed better, and I felt better about myself, when they were in the audience," Bristol writes. " I wanted to make them both proud, but politics had nothing to do with it. Loving my parents had everything to do with it."
According to Cho's blog post, Sarah Palin guilt-tripped Bristol into appearing on DWtS because she partially blamed Bristol's pregnancy for ruining her chances at the Vice Presidency, and she wanted America to be on Bristol's side for her 2012 Presidential run. But Bristol says that Cho's theory is ridiculous.
"I seriously doubt anyone who considers herself a student of American politics truly believes I impacted even one vote in that election," writes Bristol. "Why do I want to set the record straight? Because it is this type of hurtful and false narrative that people promote to make my mom look bad. For 20 years my mom had my back--and for the rest of my life I will have hers."
Palin concludes by urging Margaret Cho to call her if she has questions, and not to rely on "sources." In a surprising political dig, she adds that if Cho "understood that commonsense conservative values support the rights of individuals like you, like all of us, to live our lives with less government interference and more independence, you would embrace us faster than KD Lang at an Indigo Girls concert."
Oh, snap! Okay, is it just us, or does this letter sound a little more polished than Bristol's other Facebook notes? We're not suggesting she's employing her mother's speechwriters or anything, but something about the swift comebacks and political arguments just doesn't seem like Bristol-as-usual. Regardless, we have to give her credit for the post-script:
"P.S. If you want to baby-sit Tripp, I could use a night off."
